Ice Release (氷遁, Hyōton; Viz "Ice Style") is the advancednature kekkei genkai of the Yuki clan, and allows the users to combine wind and water-based chakra to create ice which they can manipulate through willpower alone. The ice Haku created was resistant to fire-based attacks, only melting slightly when coming into contact with Sasuke's flames. Using his special ability, Haku developed theDemonic Mirroring Ice Crystals, which allowed him to create any number of floating mirrors made of ice to use as a shield or trap an opponent.

Haku mentioned that having nearby water is an advantage, as he can simply freeze that water to create ice.

Without the Kekkei Genkai

In the first Naruto movie, several of the Yukigakure ninja also had the ability to use Ice Release techniques. However, this was not the product of a similar kekkei genkai, as demonstrated by Kakashi's ability to replicate one of these techniques with his Sharingan. In addition, unlike Haku, who could create his own ice, the Ice Release techniques used in the movie required the users to manipulate already existing ice and seems to melt at a much easier level than the ones Haku used. Another notable difference is that they can also manipulate snow. The Yukigakure ninja most commonly used the Dog hand seal to do this. Dotō Kazahana, in particular, manipulated a special type of snow that is black in colour.

In the Land of Vegetables Arc, the main villain Renga also used a technique using ice. He could crystallise the water vapour around him into ice so transparent that it would be practically invisible to the naked eye. However, this technique was never mentioned to be an Ice Release technique.

In the sixth Naruto OVA, The Cross Roads, Kajika's technique is actually classified as a Water Release, but produces ice.

Trivia

• The Viz manga translation for Ice Release was initially translated as "Haku's Secret Arts of Water". Later on in the series, with the revealing of new kekkei genkai such as the Blaze Release, etc., the Viz manga translation was given as "Ice Style" to maintain uniformity.

The Crystal Release (晶遁, Shōton; English TV "Crystal Style") is a rare and specialised field of elemental ninjutsu that can create crystal as well as manipulate already-existing crystals and crystalline structures. It is seen only in the anime, and its only known user is Guren. Additionally, due to Guren's crystal dragons being shattered by Kakashi'sLightning Cutter^[1] and Kiba having mistaken the actual element for an Earth Release technique,^[2] it is assumed earth is one of the elements needed to create crystals.

Overview

According to rumours that Tsunade had heard, Crystal Release can crystallise any substance,^[3] thus, earth,water, and wood techniques are useless against it.^[1]Using crystal ninjutsu, the user can crystallise any physical material and even the moisture in the air around them, turning them into a weapon. In the case of human targets, Crystal Release can solidify its targets down to the cellular level, imprisoning and even killing the victim should the crystal ever be struck, reducing the mass of crystal and the victim down to crystalline dust.

The Crystal Release, though powerful, has two known weaknesses, the first being that it cannot crystallise either raw energy or chakra as they have no physical mass to crystallise, allowing a person with either energy-based techniques, such lightning, fire, wind, or good chakra control to properly counter it. The second weakness of Crystal Release is that it is susceptible to a specific sound wave frequency; because crystal requires a very precise build-up of molecules, the proper sound waves can break down the build-up before the crystal can properly form.Rinji, taking advantage of this weakness, used his bats to counter Guren's Crystal Release.

The Dark Release (冥遁, Meiton; Viz "Shade Style") is an advanced nature kekkei genkai that can be used toabsorb, manipulate, and release chakra taken from an opponent. Hiruko used techniques of this nature through a mark on his left hand. This mark resembles two diamonds, one overlapping the other. Chakra is absorbed through the upper square, while it is released and manipulated through the lower. It is unknown what elements this nature entails.

To date, this form of nature manipulation has only been used by Hiruko, who obtained it using his Chimera Technique to steal kekkei genkai in Naruto Shippūden 3: Inheritors of the Will of Fire from an unknown shinobi.

Trivia

• The kanji used for "Dark" (冥, kurai) does not directly mean "darkness". It is more related to "gloomy; ghostly; night; underworld".
• The mark on Hiruko's palm also appears on the back of his three subordinates, suggesting that it is rather related to the Chimera Technique.
  • It is possible that Hiruko sealed the kekkei genkai into the Chimera mark, which would explain the method through which it is used.
